But God… Diary of Our Miracle Covid Journey

This story is written from Dee’s daily journals as she did her best to navigate through this COVID journey. Phil had completed a full Ironman triathlon on Oct 9, 2021, and a month later he began the toughest race of his life. Dee was by his side making sure he had the best possible care every step of this journey. Phil was in four hospitals during his 10-month battle, and 7-months of that time he was on ECMO life support.

Each day Dee prayed and listened for God’s direction. When things were the darkest, Dee trusted God for answers to help her make tough decisions to give Phil the best possible chance of survival. Every step of this journey, hospitals were reluctant to take Phil at first because they didn’t think he would be a success story, but Dee persisted and told them “He is an Ironman, and he is going to get better”. One foot in front of the other is how you get to the finish line. We saw God’s hand through-out this journey, whether it was through prayer vigils, or timely songs on the radio.

In retrospect, we saw God preparing us a year prior when Phil got laid off from his job, and he received a sizable severance. We were able to pay off our home and put the rest in savings. What a blessing. We pray this story will encourage you to know that God still does miracles and listens to our prayers.

Wow, I finished my book today at 6:15 am, BUT GOD. It brought many tears—both sad and happy. It’s a must-have. If everyone trusted God, the world might be more like a godly country, free of hatred and misunderstanding. We should consider ourselves fortunate to have this life on Earth. From Phil and Dee’s journey, I learned to trust in our Lord. I knew you were an Ironman, but only God and Jesus truly helped you survive this miracle we witness today. I wish everyone could see this as a miracle and let go of negativity. I’m so proud of you, Dee, for staying strong, keeping your faith, and bringing joy and life back to our friend and brother. Thank you and Amen!

I haven’t read the book yet as I followed this journey with Dee and Phil in real time. In all of her heartache watching Phil suffer, Dee put everything in God’s hands. She was an inspiration to everyone and taught us all not to allow our fears to be greater than our faith. I promise this book will show readers the same thing.

I completed the Ironman with Phil and know how strong he was during the race. Reading this book brought tears to my eyes to see how strong he really was and what the power of God can do. Read this book if you want to see what a true champion can go thru and still make it to the other side. Keep fighting my friend and hope we can compete again soon.

Phillip Hollen, you asked last week, I think, how far we’ve read before we set the book down—something like that. Well, you can quote me on that. I guess I should’ve gone back and read it again before posting, ha ha ha. I’m hooked.😢🥰🤗 I’ve been following the journey on Facebook since Phil went into the hospital. Dee Hollen did an excellent job keeping us all updated. She had so much on her plate, and this moment in the book overwhelmed me with joy, happiness, and a warm feeling I can’t quite put into words. I can’t wait to keep reading. Slim came into the room and said, “Man, honey, you read a lot already,” and I didn’t even realize I was reading so fast or so much. I just started this morning because I’ve had a headache all week, and this book has definitely kept me on edge—an inspiring story of Phillip and Dee Hollen’s journey in their book, “BUT GOD – Diary of Our Miracle COVID Journey.” As I read, I’m deeply moved by their faith and love, especially on page 37, day 64 where Dee tender moments with Phil when she reached in to kiss him and he kissed her twice, it reveals the depth of their bond. Their story fills me with joy and gratitude. Having seen Phil complete his remarkable Ironman journey and God’s miraculous intervention, I am constantly reminded of His goodness. Dee’s account is a testament to resilience and hope, and I’m grateful to have walked along their side through every trial. I’m captivated by their story and look forward to sharing more thoughts soon. Sending love, prayers, and heartfelt appreciation. Phillip Hollen, we love you both so much, and I’m genuinely proud of you both.
